Fanny

Speaker: Maxime BRENAUT

Based on Pagnol’s play of the same name—the second installment of the Marseille Trilogy—the film *Fanny*, directed by Marc Allégret, was released in 1932.
Marius, yielding to the irresistible call of the sea, left behind his father César and his fiancée Fanny, who is carrying his child. With no news from the man she loves, the young woman resolves to marry the kind-hearted Honoré Panisse to provide a father for her child. But one day, Marius returns… A masterpiece of French cinema, this film offers a glimpse into a bygone era when “unwed mothers” and “bastards” were ostracized by society. Yet the film’s exploration of the foundations of parenthood—whether biological or by choice—remains as relevant today as ever.
