Bachelor's Degree in Political Science
ISO 9001-certified since 2016 (attesting to the program’s educational and administrative quality), the Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Political Science offers a specialized curriculum in political science from the first year (L1) through the third year (L3).
Focused on understanding the contemporary world, the program aims to help students acquire:
- the body of knowledge required to analyze policy in the broad sense of “governance of societies” (general education courses in the first year, reinforced in the second year, and specialized in the third year);
- to develop a solid general knowledge base;
- to improve writing and speaking skills;
- to acquire a wide range of methodological tools applicable across the various professional fields to which this program provides access (drafting all types of written documents, delivering all forms of oral presentations, designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative surveys or studies, conducting literature reviews, mastering information and communication technologies, etc.);
- to prepare for the next step (further study or entry into the workforce) through six academic and career support modules from the first year to the third year of undergraduate studies.
Double Major in Economics and Political Science
With a resolutely multidisciplinary approach, the dual-degree program in “Economics and Political Science” is designed to meet the demands of promising new career fields, particularly in the areas of the environment, energy, decision support, development projects, transnational governance, and the regulation of complex societies. The program is designed to train professionals who, equipped with expertise in economics, political science, and—more broadly—the social sciences as well as national and international institutions, will be able to assume positions of responsibility in both the public and private sectors, in France or abroad.
In practical terms, students take the core courses from both the Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Richter campus) and the Bachelor’s degree in Political Science (Faculty of Law and Political Science campus); the University of Montpellier is currently the only institution offering this type of program. Successful completion of the program requires passing a major interdisciplinary oral exam demonstrating how both disciplines contribute to the analysis of the contemporary world. The dual expertise gained through this program is designed to enable students to pursue the top master’s degrees in each discipline or multidisciplinary master’s programs jointly accredited in Political Science and Economics, preparing them for the careers of the future.

The Doctoral School of Law and Political Science (DS ) at the University of Montpellier welcomes doctoral students in law and political science from the nine research units that comprise it.
Since July 2017, it has been part of the University of Montpellier’s Doctoral College, which includes other institutions (Montpellier Supagro, the National School of Chemistry of Montpellier, IMT Mines Alès, and AgroParisTech). The Doctoral College offers significant added value, particularly in terms of fostering relationships between doctoral students and industry, as well as through its extensive range of training programs available to doctoral students
DS comprises 155 faculty members, including 111 with HDR status (authorized to supervise research), who are affiliated with one of the laboratories associated with it:
- The Center for Business Law
- The Montpellier Center for Administrative Research and Studies (CREAM)
- The Center for Comparative Constitutional and Political Studies and Research (CERCOP)
- The Montpellier School of Labor Law
- The Institute for European Human Rights Law (IDEDH)
- The Institute of Legal History (IHD)
- The Private Law Laboratory
- UMR 5112 Center for Political Studies of Latin Europe (CEPEL)
- UMR 5815 Dynamics of Law
The 300 doctoral students enrolled inDS can pursue four different doctoral programs:
- Private Law and Criminal Justice
- Public law
- History of Law and Institutions
- Political Science
Each year, an average of about 40 thesis defenses and 3 HDR defenses are held.
In accordance with Articles 2 and 3 of the Order of May 25, 2016, establishing the national framework for doctoral education and the procedures for awarding the national doctoral degree, the role of the Doctoral School is to organize the education of doctoral students, prepare them for their professional careers, and provide them with a broad scientific foundation.
To this end, the Doctoral School selects doctoral candidates based on explicit and publicly available criteria and administers the funding allocated to it, particularly doctoral contracts. With the support of each affiliated research unit, it ensures that doctoral students prepare and defend their dissertations under the best possible conditions, notably by organizing supplemental doctoral training designed to facilitate their postdoctoral career transition, by implementing the dissertation charter, and by establishing dissertation monitoring committees.
