Political Science Training Program

Bachelor's degree in political science

Certified ISO 9001 since 2016 (attesting to the educational and administrative quality of the program), the Bachelor's degree in Political Science offers a specific curriculum in political science from L1 to L3.
Focused on understanding the contemporary world, it offers students the opportunity to acquire:

  • the body of knowledge necessary for analyzing policy in the broad sense of "corporate governance" (generalist teaching in L1, consolidated in L2, specialized in L3);
  • to build up a solid general knowledge base;
  • to strengthen writing and speaking skills;
  • to learn a wide range of methodological tools that can be used in the various professional sectors to which this training provides access (writing all types of documents, producing all types of oral presentations, designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative surveys or studies, documentary research, mastery of information and communication techniques, etc.);
  • to prepare for the next step (further study or entry into the workforce) thanks to six academic and professional support modules from L1 to L3.

Dual degree in economics and political science

Resolutely multidisciplinary, the dual degree in economics and political science aims to meet the demands of promising new professions, particularly in the fields of the environment, energy, decision support, development projects, transnational governance, and the regulation of complex societies. The aim is to train executives who, with skills in economics, political science, and more generally social sciences and national and international institutions, will be able to take on positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors, in France or internationally.
In practical terms, students take the core courses of both the economics (Richter campus) and political science (Faculty of Law and Political Science campus) bachelor's programs, with the University of Montpellier currently being the only institution to offer this type of curriculum. To complete the program, students must pass a comprehensive oral exam in both disciplines, demonstrating their ability to apply the two disciplines to analyze the contemporary world. The dual expertise sought will enable students to go on to pursue the best master's degrees in each discipline, or multidisciplinary master's degrees jointly accredited in Political Science and Economics, preparing them for the careers of the future.

The Doctoral School of Law and Political Science (DS ) at the University of Montpellier welcomes doctoral students in law and political science from the nine research units that comprise it.

Since July 2017, she has been a member of the Doctoral College of the University of Montpellier, which includes other institutions (Montpellier Supagro, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier, IMT Mines Alès, AgroParisTech). The added value of the Doctoral College is particularly noticeable in everything related to doctoral student/company relations, as well as in the very wide range of training courses offered to doctoral students.

DS brings together 155 teacher-researchers, including 111 HDR (qualified to supervise research) registered in one or other of the laboratories attached to it:

  • The Center for Business Law
  • The Montpellier Center for Research and Administrative Studies (CREAM)
  • The Center for Comparative Constitutional and Political Studies and Research (CERCOP)
  • The Montpellier School of Social Law
  • The Institute of European Human Rights Law (IDEDH)
  • The Institute for Legal History (IHD)
  • The Private Law Laboratory
  • UMR 5112 Center for Political Studies of Latin Europe (CEPEL)
  • UMR 5815 Dynamics of Law

The 300 doctoral students enrolled inDS can prepare for four different doctorates:

  • Private law and criminal sciences
  • Public law
  • History of law and institutions
  • Political science

Each year, an average of forty thesis defenses and three HDR defenses are organized.

In accordance with Articles 2 and 3 of the decree of May 25, 2016 establishing the national framework for training and the procedures leading to the award of the national doctoral degree, the role of the Doctoral School is to organize the training of doctoral students, prepare them for their professional activities, and provide them with a broad scientific culture.

To this end, the Doctoral School selects doctoral candidates on the basis of explicit and public criteria and organizes the allocation of the funding allocated to it, in particular doctoral contracts. With the assistance of each affiliated research unit, it ensures that doctoral students prepare and defend their theses under the best possible conditions, in particular by organizing additional doctoral training to promote their post-doctoral professional integration, by implementing the thesis charter, and by setting up thesis monitoring committees.
