Jean Girault (born 1980)
*The Miser*, starring Louis de Funès in the title role, is an adaptation of Molière’s famous comedy. The story is set in Paris during the Ancien Régime.
The story is about an elderly, widowed miser who wants to remarry and marry off his children at the lowest possible cost—and, if possible, at a profit! They take advantage of him by stealing his money. From a legal perspective, the play highlights several themes: paternal power as the precursor to parental authority; matrimonial regimes, particularly the dowry system; and the initiation of criminal proceedings and the use of torture at the end of the Ancien Régime.
