Jean Girault (1980)

L’Avare, starring Louis de Funès in the title role, is an adaptation of Molière's famous comedy. The plot is set in Paris during the Ancien Régime.

The story is about a widowed and miserly old man who wants to remarry and marry off his children at the lowest possible cost, preferably at a profit! They trick him by stealing his money. From a legal perspective, the play highlights several themes: paternal power as the precursor to parental authority, matrimonial regimes, particularly dowry regimes, the initiation of criminal proceedings, and the use of torture at the end of the Ancien Régime.
