Queen Margot

True to Dumas’s novel of the same name, Patrice Chéreau’s film is set during the Wars of Religion, which tore France apart between Catholics and Protestants.
To ease tensions, Queen Catherine de’ Medici arranged the marriage of her daughter Marguerite de Valois (Isabelle Adjani)—whom Dumas nicknamed Margot—to the Protestant Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV (Daniel Auteuil).
The wedding is celebrated, but a few days later, a failed assassination attempt against Admiral de Coligny, leader of the Protestants, leads to the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre on the night of August 24, 1572.
