True to Dumas's novel of the same name, Patrice Chéreau's film is set during the Wars of Religion, which tore France apart between Catholics and Protestants.
To ease tensions, Queen Catherine de’ Medici negotiates the marriage of her daughter Marguerite de Valois (Isabelle Adjani)—whom Dumas nicknames Margot—to the Protestant Henri of Navarre, the future Henri IV (Daniel Auteuil).
The wedding took place, but a few days later, a failed assassination attempt on Admiral de Coligny, leader of the Protestants, led to the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre on the night of August 24, 1572.
