A Historic School

Eight centuries of history have shaped a dynamic and innovative college.
The origins of the Montpellier School of Law date back to the 12th century, when Placentin taught law in MONTPELLIER.
The University, whose founding was officially recognized by the papal bull “Quia sapientia” of October 26, 1289, is among the first generation of medieval universities.
At that time, there were only about fifteen universities in Europe. Professors and students were in the habit of moving from one university to another, thereby giving tangible form to a Europe united by culture and law. Over the centuries, the “University of Laws”—which becamethe “School of Law” and thenthe “Faculty of Law and Political Science” in Montpellier—has remained true to its original mission.
It has trained generations of legal professionals from all countries and cultures. This is how it has built its academic reputation, its international standing, and its ambitions in this field.
