A historic faculty

Eight centuries of history for a dynamic, innovative Faculty.

The origins of Montpellier's Faculty of Law date back to the 12th century, when Placentin taught law in Montpellier.

The University, whose creation was formalized by the papal bull "Quia sapientia" of October 26, 1289, was one of the first generation of universities in the Middle Ages.
At the time, there were only fifteen or so universities in Europe. Teachers and students were accustomed to moving from one university to another, giving a reality to the Europe of culture and law. Over the centuries, the " Université des lois ", which became the " École de Droit " and then the " Faculté de Droit et de Science politique " in Montpellier, has remained faithful to its original vocation.

It has trained generations of jurists from all countries and cultures. This is how its scientific reputation, international standing and ambitions in the field were forged.
